Tomb of the Unknown Civilian by artists Fantich & Young is a remembrance memorial that commemorates unknown civilian deaths in war and conflict zones. The work consists of a collection of 196 anonymous medical dental casts taken from various ethnicities, age groups and genders; all dental casts are individually unique.
Teeth are the tombstones of the body. The dental casts act as a totem collective for unknown civilian deaths termed “collateral damage” in military combat operations. The work is a reply to nations who employ this concept to remember an unknown fallen solider with a remembrance memorial tomb titled “The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”
The work is a floor piece, the floor and wall (room) was painted black and the double-dental casts are positioned on the floor in a grid system 7 x 8 inch, the total size of the work is 300cm (D) x 150cm (W) x 20 cm (H).
